Penangites love to eat and is famous for its street food! Eating by the roadside stalls and coffee shops is an experience second to none as you watch locals of all races indulge in their favourite past time – food! 

The driest months are usually January and February. The wettest period is usually from September to November with August also being quite wet; frequent thunderstorms can be expected in these months.  Population about 1.6 million as at 2013

From Airport to Georgetown - the best method is by bus (not crowded at airport stop).  Taxi is very expensive about RMB55

Penang Sightseeing

See Georgetown - Walking and by bus (mostly rmb1.40).  Penang Taxi driver do not switch on their meter, most charged rmb15 for short distance.
One of the best ways to sight see is to walk around Georgetown; but wear light clothes, start early in the morning, and put on plenty of sun-block during the daytime.  There is also a FREE shuttle bus in Georgetown areas.

From Fort Cornwallis, stroll down Lebuh Pantai, the financial sector of Penang with its ultra-modern buildings housing banks and commercial institutions. Then turn right into Lebuh Bishop with its stores of embroidery works, silks, batik and antiques. A left turn takes you into Lebuh King featuring traditional row houses and temples. Another right turn brings you to "Little India" at Lebuh Pasar. This is the place for sarees, Indian trinkets and jewellery. The sweet scents of flowers and incense pervades the air as do the tantalising odours of spicy Indian curries that whet your appetite. Little India is also Chettiar territory where money lending flourishes to this day.


A short walk brings you to the intersection with Lebuh Pitt (Jalan Masjid Kapitan Kling). This street owes its fame to the places of worship of various races Kapitan Kling Mosque, The Kuan Yin Temple and the temple dedicated to the God of Wealth, Tua Peh Kong. After the intersection of Armenian Street, Pitt Street gives way to Cannon Street, so named for the crater in the street said to be caused by the firing of cannons by the British in 1867 to quell the triad riot. A short walk away takes you to the magnificient Khoo Kongsi or Clan house of the Khoo family - a living testimony of fine Chinese architecture featuring ornate carvings and other decorative features.

On the other side of town at Jalan Pintal Tali are junk shops where you may chance upon a rare antique item or fascinating bric-a-brac in porcelain or glass. The main throughfare, Jalan Penang, is lined with pre-war shophouse offering a range of modern goods - from textiles to electronic and photographic equipment. At Lebuh Campbell, the heart of Penang's Chinatown, are traditional Chinese medicine shops offering exotic oriental herbal remedies and jewellery shops glittering with gold.

Certain old buildings in Georgetown have been given a new lease of life when funny and fascinating graffiti art is painted beautifully on the walls. The mass of the artwork can be found along Armenian Street, Cannon Street, Acheen Street (Lebuh Archeh) and Ah Quee Street. It is quite a fun place to get lost in. Smart shops keep your eyes out for the street art on the gable ends of buildings. Besides having a bicycle rental service at the Armenian Street, you can also find a famous painting where two small children riding a bicycle look almost real.

The temple, built in 1890, took 20 years to complete. Reputed to be the largest and most beautiful Buddhist temple complex in South-east Asia, it features gardens, a giant turtle pool, shrines and beautiful sculptures. The seven-tier pagoda is a shrine dedicated to Boddhisattva Tsi Tsuang Wang, one of the enlightened who declined to enter Nirvana so that he could help bring others to salvation.

it is quite far away about 30-40 minutes

you can take bus no 203 from komtar bus terminal about rmb2.  
Going there, we strongly recommend taxi about rmb25-30 as it will take you to the top of the temple otherwise alot of walking.
Coming back, we recommend taking bus as it is easy to walk downhill.

The hills of Penang - Western Hill, Tiger Hill, Strawberry Hill, etc. are popular among visitors and locals who flock to the cool hills at weekends and during holidays. A 30-minute journey by funicular rail takes visitors to summit of Flagstaff Hill of Bukit Bendera which offers panoramic views of Georgetown and the mainland beyond said to be especially beautiful at nightfall. A bird park, souvenir stalls, restaurants and a hotel are also available at the mail recreational area.

The funicular rail service begins at 6.30am and ends at 9.30pm Fare: RM4.00 per adult and RM2.00 for children.

The Buddhist temple of Thai architecture houses a 33-metre gold-plated reclining Buddha - said to be the third largest in the world. The niches behind the statue house urns containing the ashes of devotees.

The temple dates back to 1845 and is built on land given to the Thai people by Queen Victoria of Great Britain during their rule of the island.

How to get to the Reclining Buddha Temple : Bus 101 from Georgetown is the best bus to catch. You can catch this bus from the Jetty or Chulia street, which then goes to KOMTAR and then along Jalan Burma. The temple is on your right hand side. You can't really see if from the bus so you will have to ask the driver to let you off there.  Other buses that also run near the temple are the 10, 103 and 104.

The houses used to have atap roofs but these have since been replaced with zinc sheets. The six clan jetties may be located at the backwaters of George Town but the 6ha area is home to a priceless piece of Penang’s history and a living heritage that serves as a reminder of one of South East Asia’s most important maritime ports.

The birth place of many community leaders and successful merchants, Weld Quay is a crime-free settlement – a claim several residents attest to.  Here, people consider their neighbours family and would bend over backwards to help each other – a rarity in this modern day and age.

The settlement’s oldest resident is 91-year-old great-grandfather Chew Boon Cheang from Chew Jetty. The friendly old chap doesn’t speak a word of English but will flash the warmest smile whenever he sees a tourist visiting the settlement.

Getting There:  take any bus the end at the Jetty Bus Terminal few minutes walk to the clan jetty.

The most accessible, well-known and developed beach on Penang is Batu Feringghi, which has a good selection of water sports, accommodation and dining options. For a break from the bustle of Georgetown head here for some relaxing time on a white sandy beach and try your hand at parasailing or windsurfing – it’s hard to beat.

The night market here is vibrant with colourful crafts and delicious food.

Its reputation is so legendary that some have been known to come here on a regular basis solely for the night market. Best of all, you can still bargain for the best prices.

Gurney Drive Hawker Centre, also known as Anjung Gurney is one of the most well-known hawker centres in Penang. It is located just next to Gurney Plaza. Serving a large number of tourists every evening, this is also the place where the locals will bring their foreign friends to have a taste of local fare. This place is mostly viewed by the locals as being touristy (just like Newton Food Centre in Singapore) and the standard of the food here may not be as good as elsewhere. Nevertheless, it is still a very convenient one-stop centre for those who want to try all the popular local food at one place.


This hawker centre operates only in the evening and the most popular stalls sells out at about 10pm. The ‘must-try’ food here are the typical Penang street fare – assam laksa, fried kway teow, prawn noodles, wantan noodles, rojak, satay, lok-lok and barbequed seafood.

THE delicious nasi lemak that draws hundreds each day in Anjung Gurney, Penang, owes much to the use of santan sawit instead of the traditional coconut milk.

you will find many chendol stalls in the street.  The famous Penang Teochew chendol  is located in Lebuh Keng Kwee street, off Penang Road. It is a walking distance from Komtar and Prangin Mall.  There are 2 stalls opposite each other claiming to be the famous penang chendol.

This monastery houses Phra Phutthasothon or “Luang Pho Sothon”. It is situated on the river bank in Amphoe Muang approximately 2 Kms, south of Sala Klang (the City Hall).

Wat Sothon, has a very sacred Buddha image and is regarded as one of the most revered Buddha images by the people in Thailand. The image, in the attitude of meditation has a lap width of 1.65 meters and height of 1.98 meters, is always seen entirely pasted with gold leaves by worshipers.

Legend says that there were three bronze Buddha images floating down from Prachin Buri. They appeared at Sampathuan County of Chachoengsao, dates back since the Ayutthaya Period during the reign of King Phra Borom Tri Lokkanat.

Most of the villagers live along the banks of Bang Pakong River and canals. The people seeing the situation, quickly tied the three images with ropes and tried to pull them out of the water but failed. The three images continued floating downstream.

The big one later floated and appeared at Ban Laem of Samut Songkhram where the people enshrined him at Wat Ban Laem. The small one was enshrined at Wat Bang Phli of Samut Prakan. The medium sized one, Luang Pho Sothon, floated down the Bang Pakong River to the site now as Wat Sothon.

Effects to retrieve by the people were unsuccessful the first time, until a wise man built a small shrine. A ceremony performed to welcome the image, Phra Phuttha Sothon. They prayed and invited him to be enshrined at Wat Sothon as can be currently seen.

There are two annual fairs celebrating Luang Phor Sothon, in the middle of the 5th and 12th lunar months ( around April and November).

The new tall ubosoth of Sothorn Wararam Waravihan Temple is always flooded with attention of visitors. Religious followers come to the temple to seek favours in the form of financial wealth and health from the Lanna-style Buddha image.

Worshippers all over the country pay high respect to this temple due to the miraculous events attributed to the statue, example, recovery from terminal illness using petals collected from the ground in front of the temple statue and made into herbal medicine. In return, a small donation is given to hired Thai dancers, attired in elaborate classical costumes and perform for the resident spirits.

The temple is particularly well known to childless couples that have a firm belief that praying to Luang Phor Sothorn will help result in pregnancy.

From Bangkok, there are 3 routes to Chachoengsao:

1) Use highway No.304, via Min Buri, with the distance of 82 kilometers.

By car – from Bangkok, take Motorway Expressway, and follow the signs for ‘100 Year Old Khlong Suan Market’, or take On Nut – Chachoengsao Road, drive past Latkrabang Institute of Technology, continue straight, and Khlong Suan Market will be on the left.

You'll find Klong Suan 100 year old market outside Bangkok, about 20 kilometers past Suvarnabhumi airport. It's actually more than 150 years old and is a wonderful slice of traditional Thai life. Because of its remote location, Klong Suan has only recently been discovered by international tourists who mostly flock here on the weekends when boatman also arrive on the local waterway to sell their wares. While the floating market is restricted to Saturdays and Sundays, the main market is open every day and is much less crowded. If you take the time to explore you can discover some true treasures. If you love collectable tin toys, then Klong Suan delivers. Some of the vendors here have become famous within Thailand. This bakery is not busy on a weekday, but when the weekends roll in the queue for cakes is non-stop all day. Klong Suan is several hundred meters long and packed with an endless line of tiny old-fashioned wooden shops, where many of the owners still live upstairs. Some have been here since they were born and many of the businesses have been maintained for 3 or more generations. 70 year old Dumrong has been a barber here for all of his working life. His father started the barber shop before he was born. Somchai and Siriporn run one of Klong Suan's most famous candy stores along with their granddaughter Porntip and if you head here with your children this is usually one place in the market that's hard to avoid. 53 year old Penpat runs the coffee shop started by her 80 year old father, Mr Lee, who is one of the most famous vendors at Klong Suan. She is the 7th of his 9 children and oversees the business when Mr Lee takes a rare day off. You can sip on Arabica coffee from Thailand's north and gaze at the array of family photos that decorate the walls.


There is a small museum at Klong Suan that displays all kinds of products sold in the past. Vintage shampoos, washing powder, and old tea and cookie boxes share dusty shelves with antique medicine bottles. It's housed in what was once the residence of one of the market's founders. Klong Suan market is clean and beautifully maintained, so as you explore the wooden walkways, stop for some traditional local food and enjoy the atmosphere of a bygone era, when time definitely moved at a slower and friendlier pace.

there are many legends surrounding the establishment of Putuoshan as a Buddhist sanctuary, the most-repeated is that during the ninth century, a Japanese monk making his way from China back to Japan carrying a statue of Guanyin, the Goddess of Mercy, was caught in a storm. The Goddess appeared and told him to leave the statue and guided him to safety at Putuoshan where he erected a temple (Puji Si) in her honor.

Putuo Mountain (or Putuo Shan), a national “AAAAA” class tourist scenic spot, is one of the four holy Buddhist Mountains (the others are Mt. Emei, Mt. Jiuhua and Mt. Wutai. If you have a free weekend, we recommend spending it here.

Huiji, Fayu and Puji Temples are the three largest temples on Nt. Putuo. Huiji Temple is on Foding Peak and is also called the Foding Peak Temple. It is hidden in the mountainous forests. Looking down at the peaks and islands makes it easy to immerse oneself in the serenity of this place.

About three kilometers down the mountain, you will find the Puji Temple. It was built during the Song Dynasty(960 – 1279) and covers about 11,000 square meters. Besides the figure of the Goddess of Mercy Kwan-yin herself, there are 32 reincarnations of her helping people of different appearances and identities.


Getting There: i suggest you take a high speed bullet train from shanghai to yiwu or hangzhou and travel from there. or take a flight to Ningbo.
from shanghai:
Mt. Putuo (admission fee: CNY 160.00) is in the middle of the Zhoushan Islands offshore from the city of Ningbo. The best way to get there is take the overnight ferry departing from the Shanghai Wusong Port every evening (at 19:20/20:00 – arriving the next day at 07:00/07:30). Tickets are available at the ferryboat agency (No. 59 East Jinling Road; Tel: 021-63283120; business hours 07:00 – 17:30) two days prior to departure. Passengers should note that boarding is at the Wusong Passenger Transportation Center (Tel: 021 – 56575500), not Wusong Port itself.

By air

Mount Putuo (Putuo Shan) airport is conveniently located on Zhujiajian island, a very short ferry ride away from Mount Putuo. Note that this local airport is also known as Zhoushan airport.

By land
Most tourists arrive Port of Shenjiamen by land and then take a ferry or speed boat to Mount Putuo. Shenjiamen is the traditional gateway to Mount Putuo, and it takes as little as 15 minutes to reach Mount Putuo from Shenjiamen. Zhujiajian island is connected with Shenjiamen by a bridge. It is also convenient to reach Mount Putuo via Zhujiajian.

There are frequent tourist bus services available from Shanghai, Hangzhou and Ningbo to Shenjiamen, and these tourist buses may name their destination as Mount Putuo (Putuo Shan), although the buses actually stop at Shenjiamen near the ferry dock to Mount Putuo.

The comfortable bus rides take about 6.5 hours from Shanghai and less than 5 hours from Hangzhou. Currently the buses are ferried between mainland and Island of Zhoushan, and the above travel time includes this 45-minute ferry ride. The cost of the bus is currently about 140 Yuan ($19) per person one way from Shanghai.

Note that the coastal area near Mount Putuo is being rapidly developed, and new routes to Mount Putuo are expected to be added in near future.



By sea

Meet you in the hotel lobby and transfer to Shanghai pier for the fast ferry (10:00 AM/12:00PM) to Putuoshan. After lunch, take a visit to Puji Temple. Originally built in Tang Dynasty (618AD-907AD), Puji Temple is the largest and most spectacular temple on Putuoshan. Next you are escorted to visit Fayu Temple where is famous for the delicate wood carvings and ancient architectures. Continue to tour around Huiji Temple which was built on the top of the Foding Hill. Only in Huiji Temple is Buddha Sakyamuni worshiped. Morning tour takes you to explore Purple Bamboo Forest. There you can visit the Cave of Tidal Sound. It is not a real cave but a huge vertical gash in the cliff face. Then take a visit to the Temple of Kwan-yin Who Refuses to leave which is the oldest and most important temple in Putuoshan. After lunch, take the fast ferry at 13:30PM to Shanghai. The studio consists of 13 shooting bases with a total area of up to 330 hectares and building areas of 49,5995 square meters. It is the largest shooting base in China and one of the largest in the world. It is sometimes called "Chinawood ". Unlike a typical movie set, the structures in Hengdian are made up of full-scale buildings and not facades. There are also two high-technical shooting studios there. There are no earnings from rentals of the sets and back lots, because free access is given to all productions, domestic or foreign.

The studio also functions as a theme park, so tourists can see replicas of famous structures, as well as locations of their favorite movies and TV shows.

I found this studio more interesting than studios in Hollywood because I could watch shootings of many films. On a typical day, there are about 10 crews shooting on the various lots. Both in Hollywood and Hengdian I would like to see an exhibition about the process of filmmaking from an idea to marketing. Also books and magazines about filmmaking for sale. It could be very interesting for both professional and amateur filmmakers. There could even be clubs linked to the studios.

Many famous movies have been shot there e.g.:
The Opium War - Directed by Xie Jin. Considered even-handed treatment of the war, though it is about a very shameful part of British history.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Directed by Ang Lee and won 4 Oscars in 2001.

Hero - Directed by Zhang Yimou

Emperor and the Assassin - Directed by Chen Kaige and won the Technical Prize at the 1999 Cannes Film Festival.

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor - Directed by Rob Cohen.

The Forbidden Kingdom - Directed by Rob Minkoff with two famous Kung Fu actors, Jackie Chan and Jet Li.

Because of the many films shot there, the studio has provided employment for many in the area as extras. Today it pays more to play a farmer than to be one. Still the salary is much lower than e.g. in Hollywood, but many enjoy it very much. I understand it well because I am sometimes an extra in films. When Wen Jide was 62 years old he became one of the thousands farmers who became an extra and has since acted as a chancellor, governor and an emperor. He had never acted before but drew on his experience in a singing and dance group in his village.

Many major Hollywood studios have shot films there e.g. because of historical sets and very low costs. "The advantage here is obviously economic. The stunt crews are amazing, and the work hours are very flexible," said Jeremy Bolt, producer of "Dead or Alive," which is a Kung Fu film based on the video game of the same name.

In the Hengdian Film Industrial Park are about 320 enterprises and I saw many creating props for films.


The Warner China Film HG Corporation is a joint venture of Warner Bros. Pictures, the Chinese Film Group Corporation, and the Hengdian Group. It’s the first Sino-foreign joint venture of film production. The purpose is to create films and television programs for the Chinese market.

Some film companies have had financial problems e.g. because of to slow money returns and too much film production prepayment. They could not get loans from banks because small amount of real assets. The Bank of China's Zhejiang Branch therefore introduced the "Ying Shi Tong Bao" product, which allows small and medium-sized film and TV cultural enterprises to use the copyright of TV programs as a pledge for loans.

The history of the man who build the studio is quit impressive. Xu Wenrong, was born in Hengdian and left school when he was 13-year-old. A state-run silk factory there was shutdown because of a crisis. In 1975 he got a loan from the township government to set up the Hengdian Silk Factory. He later became a multimillionaire and his Hengdian Group Company became one of the most powerful private enterprises in China with major industries of electronics, pharmaceutical, chemical, film and entertainment.

He describes himself as "a farmer turned entrepreneur". In his opinion, farmers are great. It is the laboring people who created the world and history. He was elected as the deputy of the 8th National People's Congress and won the "Golden Award of the 4th National Career-starting Award of Entrepreneurs" and "National Outstanding Private Entrepreneur ". He has been conferred the honorable titles of "National Model Worker", "the 1st Top 10 Innovation Man of News of Chinese Privately- Owned Enterprises" and the "Person of Chinese Top 25 Meritorious Brand". The TV series of "Peasant Representative" which was written according to the development history of the Hengdian Group, gained the "Five First Project" Award in Zhejiang Province. The Japanese NHK TV station shoot TV documentary, "Asian Celebrity Xu Wenrong" about him.

When director Xie Jin in 1996 was looking for someone to build a giant set for his film "The Opium War." Xu Wenrong decided to do it. He brought in 120 construction crews and built the 20-hectare set in three months. That feat impressed the filmmaker so much that he recommended the location to Chen Kaige, who was then scouting for his film: "The Emperor and the Assassin" and needed a Qin Dynasty palace. He asked Xu to help and eight months later, a palace with 27 buildings had been built.

Xu Wenrong handed the reins of the company to his son Xu Yong'an in 2004, who has said that he wanted to set up a fund, like the Sundance Institute, which was created by Mr. Robert Redford, to support film makers. The films do not have to be made in Hengdian, but they could be scripted, financed and promoted there. He also wanted to have a special film festival to promote them.

Hengdian Group is both exporting to Europe and cooperating with European companies for the sales of their products and services to the Chinese market, e.g. Segafredo coffee shops in Shanghai and some leading fashion brands. The group is also interested in promoting collaboration with European partners in the film and entertainment industry.

To improve the internationalization, Hengdian Group set up in 2007 a subsidiary company in Milan, Italy. The General Manager of the company Mr. Airaldo Piva received the "National Friendship Award of China", which is the highest national award granted to foreign experts who have made outstanding contributions to China’s economic and social progress. The winners are selected by the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs. The company was awarded the "China-Italy Investment Prize" of Sino-Italian Foundation in 2009.

The Hengdian Group has established many enterprises in poor regions such as Anhui, Henan, Hubei and other provinces to help the locals pave their way towards prosperity. The Group also provides funds to build primary schools for the Hope Project and children's palaces in the western poor regions. It established the Hengdian Polytechnic School, the Zhenjiang Hengdian Science Institute, Hengdian Group Kindergarten, Zhejiang Aviation and Sports School, Hengdian Senior High School and Dongyang Tourism School. The Group set up the Hengdian Group Hospital and Sino-Finnish Wenrong Hospital, which is based on the cooperation with Finland medical organizations. The Economic Forum of Chinese Counties was also established by Hengdian.

When you get off the bus at Dong Men stop and walk towards the footbridge you will see HuaJia fabric plaza. Inside HuaJia on the 2nd and 3rd floor there are many small curtain shops. Curtain World is located behind HuaJia. On the 3rd and 4th floor many fabrics are sold to make your own clothes or curtains. On the 5th and 6th floor there are many small curtain shops again. We bought our curtains there. Prices range from 15Y to 50Y per square meter.
