How to Feng Shui Your Office

What I am going to do now is go through a few well know Feng Shui tips that are said to help increase wealth by fixing the energy flow in your office. If you have any questions feel free to leave a comment but, as always, I probably have no clue.

1. Make sure your desk is facing the right direction
Feng Shui experts will tell you that the position of your work desk is of utmost importance. If you are facing the wrong direction you can throw off the balance of your office. The idea is to place your desk in a power position such as facing the door with a wall to your back for stability. You should never have your desk with your back to a door or window.

2. Use symbols of wealth in the south-east corner
south east corner feng shui office wealth
The south-east corner of your office is said to be the wealth area and as such you should place symbols of wealth in that area and not have anything that might represent money getting sucked away. Some things that you can place here include:
  • A jade plant in a red pot
  • Images, photos or pictures of something wealthy
  • Flowing water or a pond with fish in it
  • A heavy crystal weight on your “money-in” receipts
The idea is to make the area feel as prosperous and energetic as possible. Make sure it is clean, well lit and without any clutter. My south-east corner (above) has a couple of healthy jade plants, a coin jar I keep constantly filled and some beautiful crystals. All symbolic of wealth and power.

3. Use flowing water
fish pond feng shui
Flowing water is said to represent prosperity and wealth. This rings true in society at large as well; most successful cities or empires throughout history were located by great rivers.
It is said to be very helpful to have a flowing water fountain with fish in it at your front door (the door you enter your home or office most). If you visit the super successful companies in Asia you will find that most of them have a beautiful water feature at the entrance or places strategically within the lobby. The pond above is something I built using a large plant pot, some water plants and a solar powered water pump. Its right in front of the doorway to our home.
If you can’t build a pond or fountain then images of swimming fish and flowing water will do. My desktop backgrounds on my PC are always images of great flowing waterfalls with lots of sunlight if possible.

4. Hide cables and mess If you have a Mac this probably isn’t a problem but for us PC users there are a lot of cables. Experts say that this clutter stops a clean flow of energy in that it can make you feel stressed, overly busy and cramped. Try to clean up your office cables so that they are hidden and make the mess in the room completely go away. Set it up so that walkways and desk areas flow nicely and you feel like you are in a well organized space.

5. Keep well stocked things visible and fix leaks and breaks
feng shui prosperity
The Chinese believe that you should never leave symbols of poverty or a decline in wealth laying around. A broken and dripping tap, for example, is said to represent a constant loss of wealth or power. You should therefore make sure you fix things as soon as they break, especially in the southeast corner or your house or home office.
The flip side to that is keeping symbols of prosperity and health on display. The above photo is from my kitchen where we like to keep clear containers full of pasta, coffee (who has been drinking that?), flour, oats, cereals, etc. on constant display. Its like having a full granary. Plentiful and healthy.

6. Get lots of sunlight and fresh air
Your office should never be in a dark, stale room. You should always have lots of natural light and fresh air blowing in for as much of the day is possible. This, for me, is one of the most important things because it has a massive and scientifically proven impact on how well you feel. A lack of vitamin D can really get you down and when you feel depressed and stressed you are less creative, less efficient and have no ability to increase and improve your circumstance.

7. Learn about the Feng Shui Bagua
The Bagua is the cornerstone of Feng Shui as well as playing and important part in Taoism and many Chinese philosophies. Basically it is an 8 sides map where each side relates to an aspect of your life. For example, the southeast side relates to money.
It is really important that you check out how your home and office relates to the Bagua. For example, if you find that a toilet is in your wealth area then it is said that you will experience money problems until it is fixed with a remedy. Likewise, your relationship, fame, health, etc. can be thrown off by imbalances with the placement of rooms and elements within those rooms.

How does your office hold up?

Feng Shui is such a massive topic and it can be quite confusing. If you read books on the matter you will constantly find that they say different things. That being said, I know of several businessmen who have consulted Feng Shui experts and have reported great success. So, how is your office Feng Shui? Do you think you might be on the right track? Will you make any changes?

DIY - house or office blessing

Feng Shui Orange Peel Blessing Ceremony

The Feng Shui Orange Peel Blessing Ceremony descended from ancient Chinese tradition, has successfully been used by many people as a cleansing and blessing ritual called upon to remove negativity. It is said to be a powerful remedy, able to promote new endeavors and projects, while providing for and promoting freshness in homes and offices, as well as to those dwelling within them.
How to Begin
Residents of a home or office should set aside a quiet time for all of them to come together for this ritual. Lights should be lowered and participants should sit quietly, holding hands and insuring that all fingertips are touching. Everyone should softly repeat a calming, short prayer nine times.
Next, a bowl of water should be set out, along with three very fresh oranges.  Everyone participates in peeling small pieces of the oranges and putting them into the bowl of water. From the three oranges, tear peels into nine parts for a total of 27 pieces. The remains of the oranges can be eaten in celebration at the end of the ceremony.

The Blessing
Beginning at the front door, and using the expelling mudra, the middle and ring fingers, dip them into the water and begin sprinkling droplets of water around the threshold and door frame. As this is done, softly repeat the words, Om Mani Padme Hum, quietly but out-loud. This is a powerful mantra that invites strong benevolence and has been used for many blessings for centuries. Strongly and vividly, imagine that all forces or energy that are negative and harmful are being removed, all bad omens are leaving. Visualize wonderful blessings and positive influences being brought to your home. Beneficent blessings are entering the domain. Repeat this procedure throughout the home or office, being sure to include all rooms, fixtures and furniture, as well as the participation of everyone involved.
Ceremonial Flowers
Place a ceremonial bouquet of freshly cut colorful, vibrant flowers in the central most part of the home or office in a vase with a red ribbon tied around it. Do this even if it is necessary to set up a temporary table so that the flowers and vase rest in the center of the building. Next, be sure to allow all windows and doors to remain either fully opened for the next 24 hours, or if that is not possible, leave them very slightly opened. This openness will allow the negative and harmful, bad luck to vacate the premises while the blessing and enriching good forces are allowed to enter.

Be sure to keep freshly cut flowers in this center place of the home or office for a total of nine days. This is a very important step. If necessary, be sure to change the bouquet as often as required to maintain fresh flowers during this entire time. Once nine days have passed the last bouquet may stay in place as long as the flowers stay fresh, after that it is permissible to dispose of the bouquet. The oranges can now be enjoyed in celebration.

Chinese Ritual – 拜五方 Earth Blessings (拜四角)

First of all this is not one of the feng shui principles.
i have received a lot inquiries wanted something “extra” to boost the house energies, probably to give them peace of mind. This is a Chinese ritual to seek good fortune before shifting into a new house so you can perform this ritual before or after renovation. Or you can use it to “clean” the “bad” 秽气 (hui qi) energies for an occupied home over a period. Some also use it for resale houses that they have purchased to prevent “unseen dark energies”.
Chinese tradition consider “luck” is derived from the 5 earth energies 財運是來自五方五土. Personally i believed this ritual works better than choosing a good day to collect keys or rolling of pineapples into the house.
拜祭五方 “praying to the 4 corners and centre of the earth” is one of the unrevealed ritual practised by some feng shui master. Sometimes when a house is unoccupied for too long or if you find that your luck is going downhill, you can try this out for yourself but it does carry some strong religious overtones. Conventional Chinese custom believed that the burning of red candles, the food offerings create a certain ” bonding energy ” or connection between the occupiers and the surroundings or the “Earth” home.
Preparations
1. 5 different fruits e.g. red apple, green apple, orange, banana, plum, pineapple, blue berries, green pear ( do not use yellow pear ) you can buy either 5 of each type (25 fruits) or for convenience 1 of each type (5 fruits) up to you.
2. 5 small portions of raw bean sprout ( you can put on a red paper plate )
3. 5 pieces raw to fu or 25 raw tofu 豆腐
4. 5 small portions of groundnut
5. 5 small portions of 5 colored beans mixed together.
6. 5 pieces of “fa cake”
7. 1 piece of raw pork meat 燒肉
8. 10 red candles 红烛
9. 25 joss sticks
10. 25 sweets
11. 5 red carrots
12. 5 cups of liquor
13. 5 cups of tea
14. 1 set of praying to 5 earth 金銀衣紙 (optional if your religion does not allow) have to purchase it from incense stores.
Procedure
1. Get a Singapore Feng Shui Master to choose an auspicious date and time that is not in conflict with the destiny of the apartment and key owners of the house.
2. Lay out all the stuff in 4 corners and centre of the whole house ( not the 5 corners of the living hall ). So one corner will have 1 piece of the 5 types of fruit (e.g. 1 orange, 1 apple, 1 pear, 1 pineapple, 1 grape) or 5 pieces of 5 types of fruit (5 oranges, 5 apples, 5 pears, 5 pineapples 5 grapes), 1 small portion of raw bean sprout, 1 piece of raw dou fu or 5 pieces of raw dou fu, 1 small portion of groundnut, 1 small portion of 5 colored beans, 1 piece of “fa cake”, 5 sweets and 1 red carrot. The only difference is that the centre have 1 piece of raw pork meat, 10 red candles (1 pair at each 4 corners & 1 pair in the centre) , 25 joss sticks (5 at each corner and 5 at the centre) , 5 cups of tea & liquor (1 at each of the 4 corners and 1 at the centre) , incense (optional) place at the centre to burn after praying whereas the 4 corners do not have to. You can use red paper plates and red paper cups to place the stuff.
3. At the centre of the entire house facing towards the main door direction, light up the 10 red candles and move from a clockwise direction starting from the left corner of the house and place the 2 red candles at each corner and the last 2 candles at the centre. You can root the red candles on one of the fruits that you purchased.
4. Light up 25 joss sticks, pray for blessings and your well wishes for your family members stating their names, address of the house and bow to the 4 corners. For those with religion you can quote some power phrases and for those that not, you can recite some auspicious blessings in your heart with belief and sincerity. In a similar fashion proceed to the 4 corners and root the joss sticks, last one being the centre of the house.
5. In the same fashion greet the 4 corners and centre with tea follow by liquor or liquor follow by tea it doesn’t matter.
6. Optional, with the incense in your hands similarly pray for wellness, bow to the 4 corners 3 times and burn these incense when the joss stick is burned to half.
7. The food and offerings are not to be consumed. You can disposed the offerings after 1 day or a few hours after the ritual. Notes: The proportion of the stuff, does not affect the impact of the ritual but it is the sincerity and faith that counts!
